The Road To Independence

Edge Group Scotland Empowers Autistic Young Adults Through Travel Training - Tram Journey, Destination Leith

How Travel Training at Edge Group Scotland Empowers Autistic & ASN Young Adults

For many young people, hopping on a bus or catching a tram or train is second nature—a simple step in a daily routine. But for autistic young adults and those with additional support needs (ASN), travel can be a complex, overwhelming task. At Edge Group Scotland, we believe travel should be a door opener, not a barrier. That’s why we’ve woven comprehensive travel training into our supported day services, helping young adults take confident steps towards greater independence.

It’s more than just getting from A to B

Our travel training isn’t just about routes and timetables—it’s about life skills. We help participants build a rounded skillset: reading transport schedules, planning journeys, buying tickets, and staying calm when things don’t go to plan. Delays, missed stops, or changes to a route can be daunting, so we equip individuals with the tools and confidence to handle the unexpected.

Every person learns differently, and we embrace that. Whether someone needs a step-by-step breakdown, visual prompts, or repeated practice, our tailored approach means no one gets left behind.

Confidence is key

We focus on building confidence in a safe, encouraging environment. Participants practise real journeys at their own pace, with experienced staff offering steady support and reassurance. Gradually, as confidence grows, so does independence.

Strong local partnerships make a big difference

One of our most impactful collaborations is with Lothian Buses and East Coast Buses. At the start of each Transitions Programme intake, we welcome a double-decker bus to our centre—yes, a real one! This hands-on session lets young adults explore the bus in a calm, familiar space. They can practise getting on and off, learn how to ask for help, and chat with friendly drivers who are more than happy to answer questions. It’s a fun, pressure-free way to break down the barriers to public transport.

Success stories worth celebrating

We’re incredibly proud of the young adults who now make their way to our centre independently—no longer needing funded transport or having to rely on parents, families, or carers. That’s a meaningful milestone. It’s not just a cost-saving for local authorities; it represents a powerful step towards dignity, freedom, and self-reliance. And for families, there’s real reassurance in knowing their loved ones can move through the world with growing confidence and independence.

Opening doors to a brighter future

Through structured training, personalised support, and strong community links, our travel training sessions open up possibilities—whether that’s going to college, getting to work, meeting friends, or simply enjoying more choice and freedom. At Edge Group Scotland, we’re helping young people build the confidence to explore their world, one journey at a time.
