Our New Partnership with Harlawhill Day Care Centre

At Edge Group Scotland, we’re always looking for ways to create meaningful real-world opportunities that connect our programme participants to the communities they live in. We’re thrilled to announce a new volunteering partnership that does exactly that — with the brilliant team at Harlawhill Day Care Centre in Prestonpans.

As part of a rolling series of six-week volunteering blocks, our Year 3 Transitions Programme participants are spending selected Monday afternoons at Harlawhill, supporting entertainment sessions for older adults. From the outset, the connection between our young adults and Harlawhill’s regulars has been full of energy and warmth — and the positive impact is already clear on both sides.

Real Experiences. Real Skills.

As part of their visit, our participants help serve refreshments, support the smooth running of the afternoon’s events, and — most importantly — ensure everyone feels included and part of the fun.

Sessions at Harlawhill are known for their joy and variety, with past events including live singers, an Elvis impersonator, and the most recent crowd favourite: karaoke. Our young adults have been getting involved however they can — offering support, encouragement and enthusiasm in spades.

Behind the scenes, these afternoons also serve a deeper purpose. This is real-world work experience, helping participants develop key skills such as communication, teamwork, timekeeping, and responsibility — all while being supported by Edge staff as part of their journey towards independence and positive future outcomes.

A Two-Way Benefit

While our programme participants are gaining valuable experience and confidence, they’re also making a meaningful contribution to the lives of Harlawhill’s members.

The atmosphere they bring — one of openness, enthusiasm, and kindness — has added a new layer of connection and intergenerational engagement to the sessions. And the smiles and conversations shared each week are proof of the bonds already forming.

We’re incredibly grateful to the Harlawhill team for opening their doors and welcoming our participants into their community. Their support and flexibility are helping make this partnership a real success — and we’re only just getting started.

As the weeks go on, we look forward to watching friendships grow, skills flourish, and confidence soar — one Monday afternoon at a time.
