Scotland to Nova Scotia: A Pen Pal Journey Begins
New International Pen Pal Project Launches at Edge
We’re incredibly excited to announce the launch of a brand-new international partnership project here at Edge Group Scotland, in collaboration with Corridor Community Options for Adults (CCOA) based in Nova Scotia, Canada!
The Pen Pal Project is designed to bring together participants from both organisations — across oceans and time zones — to build connections, boost confidence, and explore each other’s cultures through the simple yet powerful act of letter writing.
This initiative fits perfectly within the core aims of both our Transitions and Life Programmes, particularly supporting outcomes around communication, confidence, social connection, and cultural awareness. Whether it’s learning to express ideas clearly, sharing interests, or gaining insights into daily life in another country, the Pen Pal Project offers meaningful learning wrapped in real-world connection.
🌍 What’s the Project All About?
To get started, participants from both Edge and CCOA will create personal introductions using a shared template to help kick off conversations. Once these first letters are exchanged, individuals will be matched based on shared interests, and the real magic begins — from there, pen pals will continue to write and build their own pace of connection.
As the letters flow, participants will learn about each other’s countries, food, cultures, languages, and daily lives. Over time, we hope to see not only improvements in literacy, writing and communication skills, but the development of real friendships and shared experiences that highlight just how connected our global communities really are.
✏️ Why It Matters
This project is so much more than putting pen to paper. It supports:
Confidence in communication
Development of writing and reading comprehension
Increased social connection
Greater global awareness
A sense of achievement and identity through self-expression
It’s also a brilliant example of how our programmes integrate outcomes-focused, person-centred learning in creative and engaging ways.
